Concert Etiquette

Concert Etiquette

Arrive at the venue in good time to warm up then line up to go on stage, as directed by the Stage Manager
Please bear in mind that a number of our performances are videoed, and any unusual movements are very  noticeable on camera!
  • All singers should have their music in the BCS folder unless otherwise instructed. (New members see Penny, our librarian)
  • Take water on stage only if you feel it is really necessary and then in a very small bottle please and drink discreetly
  • Stay standing until the last singer reaches the stage, then sit
  • Do not chat to your neighbour once on stage and do not communicate with the audience, e.g. waving or winking!
  • Stand when the conductor and soloists enter. From that point follow the conductor’s directions on the sits and stands in your score
  • Keep heads and music up and all eyes on the conductor
  • Be conscious of turning the pages quietly and standing all together on the precise beat indicated in your score or by the MD
  • Have your music pre-prepared with page markers and do not leaf through music folders whilst on stage but not performing
  • While performing hold your folders high enough so you can see the music and the conductor while not moving your head too much
  • Hold folders open and stand still until all music is finished and the conductor is finished. Close folders when the performance is over and hold them discreetly while receiving applause or sitting
  • Leave the stage in an orderly manner at the interval and be ready lined up in good time to return
  • At the end of the concert flowers or other tokens will be presented to the soloists and conductor
  • Never clap while standing.  Wait until the soloists and conductor have left the stage, then sit down and clap like mad!
  • Conductor and soloists may return to the stage and the conductor may instruct the choir to stand.  At this point stop clapping until party has again left the stage and you are seated.
  • Leave the stage in an orderly manner at the end of the concert and hand back any hired music to the Librarian as instructed.
